Introduction to Paymira: Register for the webinar

Why we show how we work

Most payroll solutions are designed, built and shipped. What’s missing in between is a simple question: does an HR lead actually understand this? Can they close a payroll run, record a salary change or report an insurance claim without being trained first?

For most providers, the honest answer is: we don’t know. It was never tested.

We know. Because we test it. Always.

What “Paymira Beneath the Surface” is.

Our existing blog series “Paymira in Practice” shows what the product does. “Paymira Beneath the Surface” shows how it comes about.

In this series, we take you behind the scenes of our product development. Not as a marketing promise, but as a concrete look at the work. Which questions we ask. Which approaches fail. What real users teach us. And how what you see in Paymira today comes out of this process.

In payroll, mistakes have consequences. A wrongly recorded pay component, an overlooked change, a task with no clear owner: these aren’t abstract usability issues. They are real risks for real people. So it isn’t enough for us to build software that is technically correct. It also has to work in daily life: under time pressure, with several open cases at once, without a manual.

That is a higher standard. And it starts long before a feature goes live.

Our principle.

Every feature we build first has to prove itself in the daily work of HR leads. We build prototypes, put real people in front of them and watch what happens. We ask them to think aloud: what they expect, where they hesitate, what confuses them. Not once, but as often as it takes until it really works.

We almost always learn something we didn’t expect. Sometimes an approach that convinced us internally fails. Sometimes a small change solves a problem we had misjudged at first. This process takes effort. But it is the only one that gives us honest answers.

The alternative would be software that seems logical internally and helps nobody in daily work. That isn’t an option.

A foretaste.

For our new task management, we tested six fundamentally different approaches. Real task management in payroll is new ground in concept: there are no established patterns to copy from. Some approaches failed in instructive ways. One held up. And the most important insight had little to do with design. It was about what real simplification actually means, and why it is so much harder than adding new layers. You can read the full story in the first deep dive of this series.

The second deep dive is about artificial intelligence. Not as a buzzword, but as a concrete question: what should AI do in payroll, and what is better left alone? We tested both. The answer changed our direction.

Why we make this public.

Because trust doesn’t come from gloss. It comes from showing how you work, even when the path wasn’t always straight.

Many software providers only talk about what is finished. We believe the process behind it says at least as much. How decisions are made. Why an approach was dropped. What real users said that made us think again. These are the things that show whether a product is really built for its users, or only for itself.

After the first two deep dives, “Paymira Beneath the Surface” appears at irregular intervals, whenever we have something to show that goes beyond the product.
